It would really depend on the ship you sailed with If I Can’t Bring My Dog shirt. Some captains would treat their ship with respect, and their crews the same. Most captains served at the pleasure of the crew, so there was a minimum set of standards a captain would adhere to in order to maintain his good standing. This includes running a tight ship, the crew working to keep the ship and the stores in sanitary conditions. Not all ships were floating bilge pumps. And in some cases, ships even had formal doctors that they took from privateers.
