The name Sankt Hans is the Danish nickname for I tried to be a good girl but then the Bonfire was lit and there was Busch Light shirt, whose name in Danish is Johannes Døberen. The Sankt Hans celebration is a merge between ancient heathen customs and Christianity. Originally it was the celebration of the summer solstice and a magical night where the powers of herbs and healing springs were the strongest. The purpose was to scare off evil powers and witches – not to actually burn them. I guess one can’t help but think of the horrible burning of “witches” which occurred throughout the Middle Ages…
